Wool is great for socks. Wool has been a sock knitting staple for centuries. It is an excellent natural insulator, because the natural crimp of wool holds tiny pockets of air. Wool has a 'memory' that helps knitted garments return to their intended shape after stretching. Wool also readily absorbs and releases moisture, so woollen socks can help to keep your feet dry in hot weather or wet conditions.
Tight twist. 100% wool yarns for socks are usually twisted a bit tighter in the spinning process. This is because socks need to be hard-wearing, especially at the heels and toes. Tight-spun 100% wool yarn wears better and is stronger that soft-spun 100% wool yarn.
Caring for woollen socks. Most wool used in sock yarns has been treated to make it machine-washable. However, some woollen yarns are hand-wash only. So be sure to check your yarn care instructions before throwing woollen socks in the washing machine. If the wool isn't machine washable, your carefully made socks may shrink and felt.
