Wool is great for socks. Wool has been a sock knitting staple for centuries. It is an excellent natural insulator, because the natural crimp of wool holds tiny pockets of air. Wool has a 'memory' that helps knitted garments return to their intended shape after stretching. Wool also readily absorbs and releases moisture, so woollen socks can help to keep your feet dry in hot weather or wet conditions.
Blending with wool. Wool is often mixed with other fibres in sock yarns. All the wool blend yarns in this category include wool and at least one other fibre, such as cotton, silk, bamboo or nylon.
Caring for woollen socks. Most wool used in sock yarns has been treated to make it machine-washable. However, some woollen yarns are hand-wash only. So be sure to check your yarn care instructions before throwing woollen socks in the washing machine. If the wool isn't machine washable, your carefully made socks may shrink and felt.
